Applications have now closed for grants under the Building Safer Communities Program to support innovative approaches to address the causes of offending, crime and community safety.
The new program includes two competitive grants streams for Victorian Councils and not-for-profit organisations:
The Creating Safer Places stream offers grants of $25,000 to $300,000 for councils to fund urban design, education, public consultation and other initiatives to deter crime and to transform public places into safer, more inclusive spaces for use by the community.
The Crime Prevention Innovation Fund awards grants of $25,000 to $300,000 for councils, not-for-profit organisations and other stakeholders for projects that test, deliver and evaluate innovative community safety and crime prevention initiatives. This can include projects that engage diverse communities or specific groups, or which establish or strengthen partnerships across community, business, sport and other sectors to tackle local crime and community safety issues.
A third grant stream, Empowering Communities, will also support community designed and delivered projects that take an evidence-informed, innovative approach to address issues impacting on crime and perceptions of safety in specific communities.
The program was launched at the Brimbank Building Safer Communities Forum on 27 November, the first in a series of community forums to be held as part of the new program in areas of Victoria where there are opportunities to tackle social challenges and crime and improve community safety.
A second community forum with a focus on the suburb of Craigieburn, in the City of Hume, was held in December 2020 and further forums will be held across 2021 to engage with communities on local issues and opportunities for crime prevention.
The program is part of the government’s Community Crime Prevention Program, which has invested more than $45 million in almost 800 projects across Victoria since 2015.
An online information session to support the competitive streams of the Building Safer Communities Program was held on Tuesday 9 February 2021. Download the presentation slides from the session.
Applications for the Creating Safer Places and Crime Prevention Innovation Fund grants closed at 4pm on 15 March 2021.
