Young people and locals in Sunshine will benefit from a major community safety boost, thanks to Brimbank City Council’s ‘Bennett Place Activation’ project.

The project received $500,000 through the Community Safety Infrastructure Grants program. The funding is for upgrades to the area that increase natural surveillance and community safety.

34 CCTV cameras are being installed around Sunshine. These will integrate with the nearby train station security system.

The project has also included new landscaping, seating and planter boxes outside the Bennett Place Visy Hub. This is to create a more inviting space for young people and locals to enjoy and socialise.

The Visy Hub provides a broad range of youth services and programs. These aim to assist young people towards employment and positive engagement with their community.

The upgrades increase natural surveillance at northern and southern ends of the Sunshine Activity Centre precinct. This prevents crime and anti-social behaviour that were previously an issue in the area.

Through its Building Safer Communities Program, the government is continuing to provide grants for Victorian councils and community organisations to deliver innovative projects to address the causes of crime and improve community safety.
